ArticleERLE RAY WALES was born on the 7th June 1900 (same year as the Queen Mother) at Murringo Street Young, NSW. He was the fourth and last child of Albert Thomas and Esther Jane Wales (Perks).

He went to primary school at Young (which is now the Young Museum) and delivered milk before and after school to their customers (his father owning a dairy at this time).

In his 14th year he was apprenticed to a master builder, Mr. Voyt (pronounced Vote) in order to learn the trade of carpentry. After completing his apprenticeship he plied his trade around the town.

Erle met and married Angela Joyce at St. Francis Catholic Church, Paddington, Sydney in 1922 (much to the horror of both denominations, he being very Methodist and she Roman Catholic). Returning to Young, they made their home next door to his parents and had three children.

The depression set in and in 1932 they accepted a frost bitten orchard advertised for free on a soldiers' settlement block at "Green Gables" Kingsvale, ten miles from Young and Harden. From there they went to "Claradale", Wombat Road, Young which was closer to town and a much smaller farm, in 1964.

Erle retired in Young in 1976. When he died in1984 he was buried at Young.

These are a few things told to Gordon (his nephew ) and what he remembers about his Uncle Erle :

·     Erle Wales had built a carpenter's workshop at the back of his home in Murringo Street, Young, and from there he carried on his building career. In his early days he had a horse named Nigger that he used in a spring cart to carry timber and his tools of trade. It is believed that Nigger was the cause of his nose being broken, when he was kicked by him. When Gordon was on holidays at Young, his Uncle Erle used to tell him to keep away from Nigger or he might end up with a nose like his. (Erle's wife says that he broke his nose while milking a cow when he was young. Erle's son Richard says that Erle's brother Des put him on a calf when he was four years old and his nose was flattened when he fell off.)

·     Erle built houses to sell and rent, he also built a house in Yass in 1928 for his sister Mabel Mote. It was a large weatherboard home, all the frame and roof trusses were made out of oregon timber, and were carted from Young by truck, from Voyt's timber yards.

The Colac Reformer, Colac, VIC, Australia26 October 1918Elizabeth Darby was mentioned in an article in The Colac Reformer, Colac, VIC, Australia, on Saturday, 26 October 1918 as follows:

PERSONAL

Mrs Wm. Darby, an old and well known resident of Colac for the past 65 years, passed away on Thursday morning, at the advanced age of 84 years. The deceased lady arrived in the town in 1853, in company with her parents (Mr and Mrs Farndale) and her sister (Mrs W Martin) and a few years later married the late Mr W. Darby, who for many years carried on a general store at Colac east. Mrs Darby was of a kindly and genial disposition, and endeared herself to a large circle of friends. For a considerable time past she suffered from partial blindness, but she bore this affliction with more than ordinary resignation. Nothing delighted her more than for some relative or friend to drop in and read to her the news of the day, the changing fortunes of the war being followed with keen interest. Even up to the last, though suffering intense bodily pain, her bright and cheerful temperament still remained with her, Christian fortitude and endurance being fully exemplified. The funeral of deceased is timed to leave her late residence at half past ten o'clock this (Saturday) morning, for the Colac cemetery.5

It's been a long, long road for Walter
By David Uren

Mr Walter Oakley drives a vintage car and rides a 50-year-old bicycle.
He's not a collector. It's just that he has had them both for a very long time.
Mr Oakley is 90. His wife is also 90. She does not mind him riding a bike but she is not too keen about him driving.
"But I don't nag him and he doesn't drive too fast," she said.
"I got my licence in 1908," said Mr Oakley. "To get it I just rode my motorcycle into the Camperdown police station and the policeman said he supposed I could drive and gave me a licence for half a crown."
Present day drivers? "I suppose they're all right but a lot of the young ones like to show off a bit," he said.
"I'm still fit," said Mr Oakley. "I suppose it's because I've been contented - and I have a good wife."
"And another reason is that the pubs wouldn't exist if they depended upon us," added Mrs Oakley.
"We're good old Methodist church-goers," she said. "We haven't had a lot of pennies but we've been happy and contented."

July 1918Sergeant William Thomas Fisher had an obituary as follows:

Memorial Service
Late Private [sic] W.T. Fisher

There was a large congregation at the Camperdown Methodist Church on Sunday evening last, when the Rev. T. Pollard James preached a sermon in memory of the late Sergeant W T Fisher. Many of the members of the I.O.R., in which organisation the deceased soldier was prominent and had held all the chief offices, were present. A special anthem was sung by the choir. The front of the pulpit was draped with the Union Jack. The service was a most impressive one.
During the course of his remarks the Rev James said:
"One of the June Quarterly tickets that I wrote with pride from the members roll of this church recently was that of our dear and now sainted hero, Sergeant W T Fisher, AIF. Our dear brother enlisted 3 years ago, July 1915, and had a long period of strenuous service with the Australian Army, first in Egypt and more particularly in France. He was born in Grasmere 29 years ago, but resided in Camperdown nearly all his life. He made heroic sacrifice, how great none can tell save those who have left a devoted wife, father, mother and young children, such as he, to fight the good fight. The amiable and sterling qualities which endeared him not only to his nearest and dearest, but to all who knew him, also caused a wounded Geelong boy to say 'we never knew a sergeant like him.' He by these manly qualities soon won deserved promotion at the front, and he has lived up to the noblest ideals of an Australian soldier and a Britisher. Wounded two years ago he made a rapid recovery and returned again to the firing line, and made with his brothers, wife and parents, a noble contribution to the cause of freedom. We commend his dear ones to the Heavenly Father, Who now has him in His keeping, another star shining in his Redeemer's crown."
